Cocoliztli epidemic of 1576 : ウィキペディア英語版
Cocoliztli epidemic of 1576

''The Cocoliztili epidemic of 1576'' was a plague of ''cocoliztli'', probably a viral hemorrhagic fever, that began in August of that year, affecting the territory of New Spain in present-day Mexico, bringing serious consequences. Along with the cocoliztli epidemic of 1545, it was one of the worst epidemics suffered by New Spain.
The epidemic claimed the lives of many of the Indigenous peoples of Mexico, mainly because few Spaniards and slaves died of the plague. In addition, the population of natives, whose population dramatically reduced by the plague, did not have an immune system capable of surviving this unknown plague.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Historia de las epidemias en el mexico antiguo )
Ignoring the disease led to so many getting killed, that the epidemic is believed to have been a combination of many diseases.
==Etymology==
The disease's name originated from the Nahuatl language word for disease, illness, and plague. The name lost this meaning when it became associated with this unnamed disease that killed Natives and Spaniards alike when it first appeared in 1545.
